The spa in Városliget was built in the neo-Baroque style according to the plans of Győző Czigler. The construction began on 7 May 1909, according to the plans of architect Eugene Schmitterer. The construction of the swimming pool cost about 3.9 million Austro-Hungarian crowns. The total covered area was 6 000 square metres. This number had increased to 890 507 by 1919.  The complex was extended in 1927 to its present size, with 3 outdoor and 15 indoor pools. Today it is possible for both sexes to visit the main swimming and thermal pools.

After the expansion, the thermal artesian well could not supply the increased water volume required, so a new well was drilled. The second thermal spring was discovered in 1938 at a depth of 1256 m, with a temperature of 77 °C. It provides 6 000 000 litres of hot water per day. Between 1999 and 2009, the Thermal Bath underwent a complete renovation.
