Like almost everything else worth seeing in Budapest, the Parliament building was also built during those brief but glorious 50 years (1867-1918) when Hungary had the good fortune of being governed by the Habsburgs (of course this is rarely if ever acknowledged by Hungarians themselves). The building is one of the best examples of neo-Gothic architecture anywhere, in a fantastic location. It is perhaps unfortunate that the impressive physical presence of this building hides an almost complete absence of meaningful political content, since Hungary has been a dictatorship of one kind or another ever since the Parliament has been built, and today is again an 'illiberal' state. The outside of the building is much more impressive than the inside, where various colourful, folksy, faux-medieval motives dominate, presenting a self-consciously grandiose image of Hungarian history that is disingenuous at best...
Thank you so much for your kind review!
Huge building, with a nice outdoor area nexto to the river. Nothing extraordinary. It is nice to watch it from Buda Castle especially at night with its lights on.
Thank you so much for your kind review!
We saw this from a river cruise in the evening and couldn’t get over it’s granddad and then we did the guided tour during the day! The visitor centre was very busy and we were held in a line until about 5-10 minutes after our selected tour time. Once they started letting us through it was a very quick process to get through leave our coats in the cloakroom and get our audio guide that would let us hear the tour. The start of the tour is up a lot of steps but if you can’t manage them there is an alternative lift you can take. The inside is very grand and beautiful and the guides were very knowledgeable about everything you could see. I highly recommend this tour!
